24 Hour Fast and Prayer Gathering
October 6-7
2020 has been a challenging year. It has been a year when the term “social distancing” has become the norm. Businesses, churches, schools, and other places where we meet and socialize with others have been closed for long periods of time. It has also bee a year in which many, out of concern for their health and the health of others have chosen to stay close to home. All this social distancing has caused many to feel distanced from others. And unfortunately, it has caused many to feel distanced from Jesus. Because of this, we believe this is a great season to focus on strengthening our relationship with Jesus and focusing on a time of spiritual renewal in our lives personally and in the life of Pleasant Hill.
In the Bible, when people of faith experienced times of spiritual decline, times that were challenging and fearful, or simply times when they needed direction from God, they would practice the spiritual discipline of fasting. In Matthew 4, Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights in preparation for His public ministry. Nehemiah (Nehemiah 1) fasted for a time when he mourned over the physical and spiritual condition of his homeland, Jerusalem. The people of Ninevah fasted and mourned over their guilt and God spared them from destruction in Jonah 3. Biblical fasts were sometimes personal and sometimes corporate as a group of people would seek God. The simplest way to describe fasting is to give up something we value or treasure for a period of time to get closer to God and hear His voice.
We are inviting everyone who is a part of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church to join us in a 24 hour fast. Here are the details:
Why? –  To enjoy God’s presence and power in our lives and the life of our church in a fresh and new way. To gain wisdom to live faithfully in these times that are changing and challenging. To grow closer to Jesus and deeper in love and knowledge of Him.
When? – Our 24 hour fast will begin on Tuesday, October 6 at 6:00 p.m. and will end on Wednesday, October 7 at 6 p.m. We will end the fast by having a prayer gathering at the church at 6:00 that evening in the sanctuary.
How? –  How you fast is up to you personally under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, and according to your health, work, and school situation. Some may choose to do a complete fast for the 24 hours, abstaining from all food and beverages, except water. Some may choose to only drink water and juice. Others may fast as Daniel did, drinking water and eating only vegetables. However you choose to fast be wise, and consult your physician if you have any concerns.
Another way to fast in our information saturated and noisy culture is to abstain from all media, such as television, social media, internet use, etc. Use the time you usually enjoy these activities in prayer and Bible reading.
There will be 4 times during the 24 hours when the staff will be sharing a devotion and prayer time on Facebook live. Those times will be 6:00 p.m. Oct. 6 to start the fast together, 9:00 p.m. Oct. 6, 7:00 a.m. Oct. 7, and 12:00 p.m. Oct. 7.
We hope that you will join us during this time of spiritual renewal as we begin praying now for all the great things God is going to do in our lives and the life of Pleasant Hill!
